“嘎乌”，是藏语的音译，指护身佛的盒子。盒子里一般装有小佛像、印着经文的绸片、舍利子或者甘露丸、由高僧念过经的药丸，以及活佛的头发、衣服的碎片等。作为护身、减小业障和增长修行之用。
“嘎乌”有金、银、铜造的三种，银制的较普遍，形状大小不一样。男子用方的，女子用圆的，挂在脖子上，垂在胸前。佩戴嘎乌，一方面有护身的意思，另一方面也有装饰的意思。因此，藏民多在出门时佩戴。嘎乌的形状不一，一般为银质或铜质，盒面上镶嵌有玛瑙、松石，雕刻有多种花纹图案。嘎乌的里面装有佛像或堪布、活佛、喇嘛的神物以及护身符等。嘎乌是由佛盒演变而来，现已成为藏族女子必不可少的重要饰物，认为佩戴上它可以护身。
